Artist Statement
I am a Fine Art student currently based in Aberystwyth, originally from the Potteries in Staffordshire. As a photographer and printmaker, my recent body of work draws from imagery gathered from around the world. Whether drawn onto screen or etched into stone, my prints capture an energetic impression of these places. My intuitive approach to printmaking allows me to create unique marks, and my practice focuses on harnessing their rhythm and flow, influenced by artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and Vincent van Gogh.

I have a passion for vibrant colour and am particularly drawn to printmaking for its ability to preserve the purity of contrasting hues side by side. I relish the opportunity to experiment with the palette of an image and the surprises that arise from the result. Artists who inspire my use of colour include Eloise Govier and Claude Monet.

I have found photography to be a deeply compelling medium. I purchased my first camera in 2019 after a trip to Australia and quickly discovered that it accompanied me everywhere. It is no surprise, then, that my photographs capture every wonderful place I have had the privilege of visiting.

I am fascinated by the differences between the lens of the camera and the human eye, particularly in relation to time. I experiment with long-exposure photography, utilizing techniques such as curtain flashes, zoom blur, light painting, and panning to manipulate the camera's perspective.

An image has the power to encapsulate a moment forever, isolating it in time and space. There is a tension in this seclusion; the worlds in my photographs exist where an un-waking dream becomes a nightmare. I am inspired by the tranquil scenes of Joel Meyerowitz. There is something otherworldly, detached from the daily concerns of our busy lives, about long exposure images.

My choice of subject matter is broad and adaptable, responding to the landscape around me. Here in Aberystwyth, inspired by Pete Davie’s ‘Little Tin Sheds of Wales’ photo series, my recent analogue photography focuses on capturing the decay of Welsh buildings. The locations I depict, much like moments frozen in a photograph, are almost lost to time.
